Bulls Free Agency Moves: Melo on My Mind

Ready, set, let the Carmelo Anthony courting begin! Free agency started at 12:01 AM Tuesday morning and the Chicago Bulls got the first shot at securing the restricted free agent.

Mother Nature seems to be on our side giving Melo a beautiful Chicago summer day for his Tuesday tour, now we just need GM Gar Forman and the front office to pull out all the stops because this dude is definitely the belle of the free agency ball this 2014 off season. His list of possible suitors seems endless and the money is flowing.

After his visit in Chicago Tuesday, Anthony will head to Texas to meet with the Dallas Mavericks and the Houston Rockets and later to Los Angeles to hear out the Lakers. He will be wined and dined by each ball club and after his travels could ultimately crush some hearts and re-sign with his Knicks in New York for a fat contract.Despite the risk, it looks like the Bulls are all in on Sir Anthony after decking out the UC with the “We want Melo” signage and pictures. Chicago drafted and traded for Doug McDermott to clear cap space last week, head coach Tom Thibodeau is on board for bringing in the small forward with the hot shot, Joakim Noah has been recruiting the sharp shooter since January during the All-Star game and the city of Chicago has been wishing for a scorer since the Michael Jordan-Scottie Pippen era.

If you’ve missed the rumblings about Carmelo, here are some important factors to consider:

Why Should Carmelo Come to Chicago?

For a better lack of words, the Bulls have been scoring challenged over the last two seasons. They are desperate for a superstar scorer and Anthony could be that guy. He’d be an instant offensive savior for this Bulls team. He averaged 27.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists last season.

Melo understands legacies are made by championship rings and not necessarily how many points you score a game. The Bulls want to win a championship right now. They don’t want to wait a year to clear out cap space to bring in better players. They have a strong core and know they need a solid scorer to complete their puzzle.

The Bulls are in the Eastern Conference – the Mavs, Rockets and Lakers are all in the Western Conference which is most definitely a tougher crowd. Think the reigning champion San Antonio Spurs, Kevin Durant and the OKC Thunder, Blake Griffin/Chris Paul and the Clippers – the talent is honestly ridiculous. Other than the Miami Heat, the East is up for the taking. Your odds of at least making it to a NBA finals is far more likely in the Eastern Conference.

What Could Hold Melo Back?

More money more problems – Under the collective bargaining agreement, the Knicks can offer Melo a maximum contract of $129 million over five years. Any other potential teams can offer Anthony a maximum of $96 million over four years. Thats a hefty pay cut.

Derrick Rose has been injury prone over the last two years. It may be difficult to sell a team with an uncertain superstar piece of the puzzle. Rose could come back stronger than ever this upcoming season, or he may not. It’s all up the air at this point and we know Melo isn’t interested in hanging around to wait and see.

Stroke the Ego: Other stars have openly recruited Anthony. Dirk Nowitzki and Tyson Chandler are ready for Melo in Dallas, Dwight Howard and James Harden are waiting in Houston and his good buddy Kobe Bryant is ready to chat man to man in LA. Melo and Lebron James even have a bro-mance happening that could hinder his decision. The Bulls superstar, who hasn’t suited up in quite some time Derrick Rose, thinks it’s not “his job” to recruit star players. However, he may not have been openly recruiting Melo, Rose did attend today’s meetings in Chicago.

Brooklyn Born: New York is Melo’s hometown and I’m sure he feels a connection to his city. It would mean more to win a championship in “his city” rather than some other location. It’s going to take some serious schmoozing for Anthony to move his family out of his fancy life in the Big Apple and run with the Bulls.

Be prepared to hear quite a bit about Carmelo and his free agency journey across the US over the next few weeks. This is only the beginning as there are quite a few quality free agents available this off season.

Just remember, it’s only speculation until Melo officially accepts an offer – hopefully he’ll keep things classier than BronBron’s “The Decision” on ESPN a few years back. No need to nationally broadcast your choice, but if you take your talents to Chicago Melo, I promise we’re better fans than you’ll find in NY. #letsgo #Bullieve

Biggest NBA Fashion Faux Pas

russell-westbrook-kevin-durant-lebron-james-dwyane-wade-glassesToday’s professional athletes are not only remarkably talented at their given sport, but have also become legitimate celebrities. They attend the best parties (on the off season of course) and eat at the finest restaurants, but these pros have also taken interest in their overall fashion sense and ultimately an extension of their personal “brand.”

Specifically, NBA players have snagged the spot of most “fashion forward” when it comes to professional athletes. Because the NBA playoffs are broadcast nationally, it is the time of year most eyes are on these players vying for the National Championship. The NBA playoffs have also become a time I like to refer to as “NBA Fashion Month.” This is where we get a true look at the boundaries these guys are willing to push.

Becoming a trend setter is something any fashionista strives to achieve, but sometimes these NBA fashion mavens push the envelope just a little too far. Here are some of the NBA’s biggest fashion misses.

Man-pris:

dwyane.wade_man pris

It’s the second round of the NBA playoffs and DWade comes strolling in to take on the Heat’s rivaled Chicago Bulls. The camera is zoomed in on his upper half where he’s looking casually cool, rocking some lightly shaded sunglasses and a stylish double breasted blazer. THEN the camera zooms and out we notice that Dwayne Wade is wearing capris and we have a solid look at the man’s ankles. Rule of thumb – Man-pris are not and will never be sexy.

Westbrook manpriI had thought DWade’s man-pri mania was just a phase or perhaps he had washed a pair of dry clean only pants, but then the Thunder’s Russell Westbrook shows up on Instagram with this number. I couldn’t contain myself. He wore this outfit to an actual event he attended with his mother.

Grandpa Sweaters:

LeBron-James-searches-for-answer-on-deplorable-sweater2-594x329There must be something in the water in Miami because this palm tree-type grandpa sweater Lebron wore for a post-game press conference is rough. The fitted sweater would be fine had it been a nice solid red, instead it has a very floral print on it.

Carmelo-Anthony-2013-nba-playoffs-fashion-game-4-round-2A little farther up the east coast, the Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony rocked an equally grandpa sweater for a different post-game interview with the press. He even accessorized with a grandpa hat.

Eccentric Prints:

Russell Westbrook LOVES prints. He loves print polos, print button ups, print pants – you name it and Westbrook wants it to have a print on it. Most of the time they’re not prints you’d want to find anywhere other than a shower curtain.

dwade floral printDWade strikes again and this time it looks like he’s wearing some type of curtain he found in a Cuban abuela’s house down in Miami. Aye dios mio.

Pleather:

Harden PleatherPleather may have made it’s way onto the runways this past spring season, but that doesn’t mean we want to see it on professional athletes. James Harden played like a monster in Houston last  season however the brown leather patches don’t work with the black frames and black beard.

Justin BieberHonorable mention to “NBA Fan” Justin Bieber and his pleather shirt he wore on the sidelines of the playoffs this season – YIKES.

The Murse:

murseA man purse – more commonly known as a “murse” is not an easy accessory to pull off. Purses are highly feminine, but sometimes men have things they need to bring with them that won’t fit in their tightly fitted pants pockets. Unfortunately, Dwyane Wade’s red murse does not make the cut of acceptable man bags.

lebron-man-purseAs teammates on a championship basketball team, it’s only proper if King James also sports a murse when heading to the locker room before games. I don’t know if it’s because these guys are extra huge, but carrying a tiny little purse seems extra hysterical. I would invest in a designer gym-bag guys.

The Way to a Woman’s Heart:

GQ has the right idea for these extremely fit physiques – stick to the suits boys. There is nothing a woman loves more than a man in a fitted suit (the pocket squares don’t hurt either).

Old-School NBA Rivalry: Bulls vs Knicks Cheat Sheet

It’s time to add a little fuel to the fire in one of the NBA’s oldest rivalries as the Bulls head to New York to face the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks are looking to avenge a loss suffered to Chicago earlier in December, but this time they won’t be missing their main man Carmelo Anthony. With Melo on the court, New York has a definite advantage, but you can’t count the Bulls out as they’ve been able to compete with the elite despite being shorthanded.

New York is still leadin

g the Eastern Conference at 19-6 and have continued to prove themselves worthy of their new-found success throughout this season. Chicago is leading the Central Division in the East at 14-10 and have played much better than anticipated thus far as they are missing super-star Derrick Rose. Bring on the Big Apple!

USA Basketball Roster Announced: Is it the Next Dream Team?

USA! USA! Get ready to get your Olympian on friends. The 2012 London Olympics are sneaking up on us and it’s right around the corner. The U.S. Olympic basketball team announced it’s final roster Saturday and boy is it jam-packed with superstars. Will we see a repeat gold medal performance like the 2008 games in Beijing?

Drumroll please…here is your 2012 Team USA Basketball roster: Carmelo Anthony (New York Knicks); Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers); Tyson Chandler (New York Knicks);Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder); Blake Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers); James Harden (Oklahoma City Thunder); Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers); LeBron James (Miami Heat); Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves); Chris Paul (Los Angeles Clippers); Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder); and Deron Williams (Brooklyn Nets).

There is some serious talent on this Olympic team (as would be expected). Ten of the players were NBA All-Stars and six have appeared at least once in the NBA Finals. They have the reigning NBA MVP (James), Defensive Player of the Year (Chandler) and Sixth Man of the Year (Harden). Anthony, Bryant, James, Paul and Williams are the Olympic veterans on the team.

If you’re a basketball lover, you might have noticed some missing NBA All-Stars. Derrick Rose (ACL), Dwight Howard (back), Dwyane Wade (knee) and Chris Bosh (abdomen) all would have most likely made the cut, but they’re all “rehabilitating” their injuries. Rose and Howard actually had surgeries to rehabilitate. Then there are my favorite Miami Heat players; Wade should suck it up because he might be too old after 4 more years to top the list of “elitest” players in the NBA and Bosh – I just don’t think they let dinosaurs in the Olympics.

Team USA will be coached by Duke University Hall of Fame mentor Mike Krzyzewski, who led the USA Basketball Men’s National Team to gold medal finishes at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Assisting Krzyzewski is Syracuse University and Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, and former NBA head coaches Mike D’Antoni and Nate McMillan.

There are some other familiar faces heading to London, but not representing the U.S. The list includes: Luol Deng, who will be playing for Great Britain, Marc Gasol, Paul Gasol and Serge Ibaka will all be playing for Team Spain.

Lucky for Bron Bron, he still gets to be “White Hot” in the new Nike Team USA uniforms. Bring home the gold medal gentlemen!

Carmelo Anthony Outshines Rose’s Return in Easter Thriller

I have to admit, today’s Bulls-Knicks game was hard to watch. There was some good, Derrick Rose returned to the Bulls lineup after missing 12 consecutive games due to a groin injury, he proved he was ready to make an impact, but he also has some work to do. No matter how many endurance drills you practice off the court, nothing is quite the same as the real deal. There was some bad, Carmelo Anthony had his best game as a Knick, 43 points and seven rebounds. He hit two clutch 3-point shots, one at the end of regulation and the other with 8.2 seconds left in overtime putting the Knicks up 100-99.

Rose looked really rusty and timid in the first quarter, he only had seven points. He must have found some confidence in the locker room at halftime because he had 14 points in the third quarter. He looked a bit more like himself in OT, but couldn’t make a tough floater for the winning shot. Rose played 39 minutes, had 29 points,  six rebounds, four assists, and eight turnovers. The main problem with Rose’s return was the turnovers, we all expected rustiness, but no one wants to give the ball to the opposing team.

The Bulls currently have the best record in the NBA, but after today’s loss they fell to 43-14. Coach Tom Thibodeau will continue to push his team to the number one seed, his starting lineup has only started 11 full games together this season and they lost for the third time in four games. Hopefully Tuesday night’s rematch at the United Center will bode better for the Bulls, but I am definitely not looking forward to another 8:30 p.m. start – it’s way past my bedtime.

Deng Deng He’s Our Man

Tonight the NBA is announcing the All-Star reserves and I think most Chicago fans have one man in mind for a spot, Mr. Luol Deng.

Deng is averaging 16 points and seven rebounds a game and is probably the Bulls’ best defender. I think he definitely deserves a spot. He’s going up against Celtics vets Ranjon Rondo (who I just can’t stand after he threw a punch at Rose a few years back in the playoffs) and Paul Pierce. Even though Deng missed 7 games due to a torn ligament in his left wrist, after returning the Bulls are 3-0 and have won by 23, 21 and 23 – he’s the man and I’m not the only one who thinks so, he has the support of his teammates and coaches too.

“I hope they’re good,” Bulls’ coach Tom Thibodeau told ESPN of Deng’s chances. “You guys who follow our team, I think you understand how important he is to our team. Lu doesn’t have to score to have a great impact on our team and winning. He plays great defense. He plays a great floor game. He moves without the ball. He makes the extra pass. And he has very good statistics, but you can’t measure his impact statistically. I know what he brings. I know all the coaches and all his teammates appreciate everything that he does.”

The 2012 NBA All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, February 26, at the Amway Center in Orlando. Whoever is chosen will be joining Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, and Dwight Howard on the Eastern Conference team.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed because DENG HE GOOD!

Derrick Rose – Best Kind of Mama’s Boy

Derrick Rose keeps his mama close to his heart and is now taking her on the court. Last night during the Bulls 105-102 defeat over the New York Knicks, Rose debuted his new “Brenda” signature shoe.

“Brenda” is the latest colorway of Rose’s signature adiZero Rose 2.5 line, named after his mama because red is her favorite color – seriously how precious can you get? With NYC commonly referred to as “The Big Apple,” Rose and Adidas would be hard pressed to find a better place to debut the shoe.

I think Adidas should continue the new color schemes because Rose has dominated the last 2 games where he debuted his new shoes. Rose dropped 34 points against the Bucks when he debuted the adiZero Rose 2.5 last week. Last night he out shined fellow All-Star starter Carmelo Anthony with 32 points, 13 assists, and an answer to every Knicks rally.

I say bring on the shoes!!
